Grok in the car โ what actually works
CarPlay vs the phone "Hey Grok" shortcut, and what to expect when your phone is locked. Eyes on the road; voice only.
Inspired by public "does Hey Grok work in CarPlay?" questions on X (e.g. a reply thread under this @grok post). Behavior varies by iOS version, car, and Grok app version โ test parked first. Not an official Apple, X, or xAI guide.
Quick answer
| Way | In the car? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grok app on CarPlay screen | Check your dash | We couldn't confirm a Grok CarPlay app. If no Grok icon appears on your CarPlay screen, use the Siri route below. |
| "Siri, Hey Grok" (shortcut) | Usually the best bet | Siri works through CarPlay and the car's voice button. If the shortcut needs to open the Grok app, iPhone may ask you to unlock first. |
| Vocal Shortcut / Voice Control "Hey Grok" | Hit or miss | Road noise and a locked phone can block it. Treat it as a bonus, not the plan. |
| Grok voice already open before you drive | Most reliable | Start a voice chat while parked, then mount the phone and talk hands-free. |
Set up (parked)
- Make the "Hey Grok" shortcut first โ free Hey Grok checklist.
- Settings โ Siri โ turn on Allow Siri When Locked and the "Hey Siri"/"Siri" listen option.
- In the car (parked), hold the steering-wheel voice button or say "Siri, Hey Grok." See if Grok voice starts or asks you to unlock.
- If it asks to unlock: start Grok voice before driving, or let a passenger handle it.
- Bluetooth audio: make sure the call/voice audio goes to the car speakers, not the phone.
Safety + battery
- Never type or read Grok answers while driving. Pull over for anything visual.
- Follow local hands-free laws.
- Long voice chats use battery and data โ plug in.
